Caithness Potatoes have a large, diverse network of trialling situations for the most promising selections to prove themselves under. Only when a variety has shown itself capable of superior performance in its field is it then entered for for National Listing and Plant Variety Rights trials.

These trials are Government run, independent trials and are designed to prove the suitability of a cultivar for commercial production.

In these trials a variety will have to prove itself to be Distinct, Uniform and Stable, and will have its disease resistances quantified.

Only once a variety has completed this exhaustive process can commercial development begin. Caithness varieties have proven themselves to be superior in many countries and climates.
