Seed Growers (continued)

In excess of 800 hectares are required to supply Caithness with its requirements for seed multiplication and trialling work. Almost all of this land is rented by our growers, on a rotational basis, from farmers in East Central Scotland – the centre of Scottish seed potato production.

The minimum potato rotation on these farms is 1 year in 7 with many farms preferring a 1 year in 10 rotation. This traditional long break from potatoes is quite different from many other countries.

Production targets are agreed between production and sales directors and are continually monitored to supply seed tubers that are finely specified to meet the exact requirements of the individual customer. To assist in this process Caithness is very fortunate to have highly trained scientists and agronomists on its staff.

An almost daily dialogue between sales, technical and management staff ensures everyone understands the requirements of the whole business and means the whole team can work towards supplying the right product.
