In early 1985, the first batch of seedlings selected for development was undergoing the statutory Plant Variety Rights & National Listing Trials. The requirement to engage in commercial potato production became an urgent priority.

To achieve this objective, the Caithness Potato Breeders(CPB) Directors sought to attract the interest of sound, reputable and active seed potato growers/merchants.

A group of three Perth-based grower/merchants with an excellent reputation and with outstanding business acumen expressed an interest in complementing the breeding activity by providing the full infrastructure of stores, machinery, grading, and technical know-how, needed to manage high grade seed production.

At this point Caithness Potatoes Ltd moved from the drawing board stage to reality.
